Dayanna Volitich – How to Ensure You Have a Great Sleep

Not getting enough high quality sleep can play havoc on your lifestyle and doing so over a long period of time can actually damage your health. Our ability to concentrate, deal with stress, organize and retain energy throughout the day depends heavily on sleep and for many people it is something which they have great trouble with. My friend and healthcare professional Dayanna Volitich helped me to change my ways after many years of poor quality sleep and I wanted to share with you the keys to getting to sleep and ensuring that you have a good night’s sleep.

Gadgets

The first step is to have a rule that in the 2 hours prior to going to bed, you avoid the television and any gadgets such as your phone or tablet. The problem with these gadgets is that they wake up your brain and then force it to consume lots of information, the result of doing this is that when you try to go to sleep, your brain will be doing the opposite. Try to read a book in the time leading up to you going to bed and make sure that it is fiction as non-fiction will also kick your brain into action with thoughts.

Eating and Drinking

Food is an energy resource which of course is the last thing that you need when you are trying to nod off. With this in mind you should really make sure that you avoid food altogether up to 3 hours before you go to bed. If you must eat closer to bedtime than this, it is recommended that you avoid anything which is high in energy such as sugars or carbs. What happens when you eat close to bedtime is that your body will process the food and then slowly release the energy as you sleep, which causes interrupted sleep and poor quality shuteye.

Alcohol

It is no secret that when you drink alcohol you can sleep much easier but what may of us don’t know is that when we sleep after boozing, your brain will be far less likely to fall into REM sleep. REM is a deep stage of sleep which the brain goes into, which is the best time for the body to repair, rest and recuperate. This is not to say that you can never drink of course, but doing so with regularity will have a detrimental effect on your quality of sleep.

Light

Where possible you should always try to completely block out any light which is coming into your room, even if it is feint. The reason for this is that the body reacts immediately to light and thinks that it is a signal to wake up and start functioning. Even when you have your eyes closed the light is still received by the brain so if you are able to block out all light you should certainly try and do this.
