Chatting Champions League Chances With Michael Volitich

In my view there is no knockout tournament in the world quite like the Champions League and each year we see the very best teams in Europe compete to be crowned Champions. My buddy Michael Volitich is an avid Real Madrid fan and as you can imagine he has been a very happy boy over the last 3 seasons as Real have dominated Europe. We debated recently on who has the best chance to win it this year and although I disagree on a few choices, here is what Michael’s thoughts are on the Champions League contenders for 2018/19.

Liverpool

Liverpool were desperately unlucky in last year’s final with goalkeeper Karius having a night which he will want to forget. With that being said Liverpool have invested well in Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson and with Virgil van Dijk now  regular fixture in the Reds defense, Liverpool could certainly go one better this year and win the trophy. Liverpool will first need to get out of their tough group with Napoli and PSG but should they beat Paris in the Parc de Princes next week, they can guarantee qualification to the next round where they can launch their bid to become Champions.

Barcelona

Barca have struggled in recent years but their new-look approach under Ernesto Valdeverde looks as though it will give Messi and Co. the chance to win their first European cup in almost 8 years. This Barca team is gradually settling in together with recent recruits Dembele and Coutinho forming a formidable partnership, add Messia and Suarez to the mix and you have a team which will strike fear into anyone. Barca currently sit at the top of their table in the group stages and a first place finish could give them the springboard that they need to once again become champions of Europe.

Man City

Michael believes that Manchester City will be the champions this year and it is hard to argue against this. Despite a tough couple of years in the competition Pep Guardiola has a side which is destroying the English Premier League and it is only a matter of time before they add the Champions League to their ever-growing trophy cabinet. Man City have already qualified to the knockout stages and with a favorable draw there is no reason they cannot win.

Real Madrid

If Real are in the competition then there is always a chance but their form this season in both league and Europe has been woeful. Real will qualify from their group but they may do so in second place, which could result in a very difficult last 16 tie. Expect the Galacticos to challenge but fall just short.

Bayern Munich

As long as Bayern are in the competition they have a chance of winning, especially with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm. Bayern however have failed to impress in the league this year and if that form continues in the Champions League, they will fall short at the latter stages.

Juventus

Juve have appeared in 4 finals in the last 20 years and lost all of them, which is why they invested so heavily in Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer. Whether or not CR7 has enough to launch Juve to success is uncertain and whilst  they will definitely be there in the latter stages, a win may prove a bridge to far for the Old Lady.
